Beringin: The cleanest & nicest looking Pempek shop in my opinion.

Palembang = Pempek!

You MUST try this most famous dish of Palembang! It is served boiled/steamed, grilled or fried.
Pempek dough is a mixture of fish + tapioca flour + water + salt. Tastes similar to a chewy fishcake.
The best tasting (& expensive) pempek uses "belido" fish, which swims in the nearby Musi river.

There are many popular eateries selling pempek but for a start,
if you are looking for the cleanest, biggest & brightest eatery, try "Beringin".
(This photo was taken on a cloudy day, so please pardon the bad lighting. :p)

Irresistable "Pempek Telur Goreng" (Fried pempek filled with 1 whole duck egg inside)

Just like opening a good durian, SHIOK ah! Very enjoyable! (I'm a durian lover lah.)
To be eaten with sweet & spicy "cuko" (chilli with garlic, sugar, salt, vinegar) sauce.

My favourite! "Pangsit Ikan Goreng" (Fried pempek with prawn filling)

Other popular dishes include "Tekwan" (pempek in crab stock) and "Model" (soup with pempek with tofu beancurd inside). An interesting boiled/steamed pempek is called "Pistel", filled with minced young papaya and tastes a bit like popiah/spring roll filling.

Serious pempek eaters recommend eateries "IP" (pronounced as "Eee-Pay") and "Aik" (pronounced as "Egg"). Locals visit these 2 eateries not only to eat but to also buy & send the home-made pempek overseas to their family & friends! :)
